During the upcoming visit from Tom Brown, we are fortunate to be able to offer a professional development opportunity for staff in your unit who interact with students on a daily basis. On April 18th, Tom Brown will lead participants in a simulation exercise (BARNGA) designed to increase our capacity for strengthened connections with students and colleagues. BARNGA places participants in a situation where they actually experience the “shock” of realizing that, in spite of many similarities, people of differing cultures have different ways of doing things—whether the “culture” differs in terms of ethnicity, gender, age, or otherwise. The experience happens in a safe, time compressed setting in which participants have the opportunity to encounter, reflect, and learn. Like other simulation exercises, BARNGA uses a learning methodology that gives participants an experience they can participate in rather than just read or hear about. It is a powerful learning experience that enables participants to consider how their actions and reactions contribute to strengthening relationships with those they encounter in their professional and personal lives. BARNGA is an especially effective experience for frontline staff in offices where policies and procedures can cause conflicts with students, faculty, and staff (e.g. Registrar, Financial Aid, Business Office).
Thomas Brown is a lifelong educator with an impressive record of success in creating academic and student affairs programs that promote increased satisfaction, achievement, and retention. Tom is known for his ability to communicate effectively with the diverse constituencies that comprise educational institutions, organizations, and communities – from board members to executive leadership, from faculty and administrators to frontline staff. A thoughtful, experienced, and engaging leader, Tom often uses humor to produce frank and meaningful dialogue around contentious and complex issues. His work is based on an integration of theories, research findings, and practical experience that makes a real difference for individuals and organizations.| View other The OSU Division of Student Affairs and the OSU Office of Academic Programs and Academic Assessment events |
